What is a Magnet School?

A magnet school is a special school because all learning is centered around a specific focus. Everyone in the school -- the students, teachers, principals, and staff -- share the same excitement and passion in a specific area of interest.
For example, in a visual and performing arts magnet school, the entire curriculum is infused with lessons focusing on the arts. A history lesson may include creating a piece of pottery, and a math lesson may comprise composing a song. Students still learn all the math, science, and English concepts they need to succeed in school and in life. Sometimes they even learn the concepts without realizing they're learning them.
Magnet Schools work because they help make all learning relevant by applying it to an area that a student already finds interesting and is passionate about. The students, the teachers, the staff, and the principal all choose to be at the magnet school because they share similar passions and talents.
Magnet Schools also have teachers who are specially trained in the focus areas. For instance, the math, science, and engineering schools have teachers who are specially trained in those areas. The visual and performing arts magnet schools have teachers who are specially trained in art and dance as well as choral and instrumental music.
Magnet Schools are public schools in the Lansing School District, and -- like any public schools -- are free. A A student can attend a magnet school no matter where he or she lives. Students come from all over to attend Lansing Magnet Schools. But all students must go through an application and approval process.
Free transportation is provided to those students who live in the Lansing School District but reside more than 1.5 miles from the school.
